Experience not required!

Most of us believe the myth that success comes from years and years of experience. The truth is success comes from failures, lots of failures and the ability to ignore fear.

According to an article published by Business Insider, on March 7, 2014, Colonel Harland David Sanders was fired from dozens of jobs before founding a successful restaurant.  Dr. Seuss had his first book rejected by 27 different publishers.

While experience can certainly aid in our success, many people have become hugely successful without any experience at all. Don’t limit your success because fear is telling you, that you will never be able to achieve whatever it is you are passionate about.

In the book Start by New York Times bestselling Author Jon Acuff.  Jon says, “Punch fear in the face.”

Hitting the target has little to do with your experience and a lot to do with keeping your eye on the target. Allow me to explain.

Over the Christmas holiday, I was visiting with my wife’s side of the family. My youngest son had got a Nerf cross bow and was having a blast when my brother-in-law went to the basement and returned holding a real cross bow. It was cool looking.

I am not a hunter nor am I a weapons enthusiast, but this thing just screamed real men have cool toys like this.

Then he said, “Do you want to shoot it?”  Immediately fear said, “NO!  You can’t do that, you have never shot a cross bow before, you haven’t even shot a gun and remember in Boy Scout camp, when you tried to learn archery? That didn’t turn out so well, did it?  And might I add, it was your son’s trip to Boy Scout camp, so you were in your mid thirties. Don’t do it.”

Without another thought, I said, “Yes, I would like to shoot it.” I finished my pie and we headed outside.  I was thinking to myself this will either go really well or this could go really bad, either way I am doing this!

With absolutely no experience and only a few minutes of instruction, I was able to hit the target.

The first time I pulled the trigger I came pretty close to the center ring and I would have been happy with that, but I got to take a second shot.  Check out the picture above, not too bad for an amateur.

How did I do it?  I kept my eye on the target!

With 2015, less than 18 hours away, I want to encourage you to make only one resolution for this coming year.  Resolve to stand up to fear and punch it in the face!

Whatever your dreams are you can do it. If you want to publish a book, you can publish a book. If you want to be a better husband, you can be a better husband, if you want to pay off your debt, you can pay off your debt. If you want to lose weight, you can lose weight. All you need to do is keep your eye on the target and you will achieve great things in 2015.
